How Does Your Garden Grow? is set for 10-11:30 a.m. at Chippewa Nature Center. Spend the morning at the Children’s Garden and learn the basics of gardening. Enjoy a story, create a nature journal and plant some seeds to take home and watch grow. Meet at the Homestead Farm. This event is free. www.chippewanaturecenter.org
A Community Carnival and Barbecue is set for 12-2 p.m. at New Life Vineyard Church, 1014 E. Ashman St. in Midland. There will be food and family-friendly activities for all ages.
Sanford Civil War Veterans Cemetery Walk is set for 1-5 p.m. at Jerome Township Cemetery. Come along on a guided walk through cemetery just north of Midland in Sanford. Listen to stories from Sanford’s own Civil War veterans, portrayed by local actors. Hear of the war and life after when they came to settle and make their way in early Midland County. The 7th Annual Tapped Craft Beer Festival is set for 6-9 p.m. at the Larkin Parking Garage in Downtown Midland. The first two levels of the structure will have the brewery samples scattered throughout, while the top floor will be transformed into an interactive beer garden. Live music will be performed by Brett Mitchell and the Mitchfits. General admission is $30 and can be purchased at tapped.eventbrite.com. Each ticket includes admission to the event, a souvenir 5oz tasting cup, and six drink tickets. Additional drink tickets can be purchased during the event. Clay Hand Building is set for 1:30-4 p.m. at Creative 360. Dive hands-first into the slippery, lumpy, squishy world of clay. Transform imaginative ideas into both functional forms and artistic sculpture. By the end of this week-long wallow into the world of clay hand building with artist Melinda Gaal, participants will know how to pinch, coil, slab and glaze your way through a ceramic studio. Pre-registration is required by June 16. Cost is $75, plus $25 materials. The class will continue 1:30-4 p.m. Monday, June 20 through Friday, June 24.
A Summer Solstice Hike is set for 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Little Forks Conservancy's Averill Preserve. Take advantage of the long daylight hours and join Little Forks for an evening one-mile hike. All are welcome.
A History Tour by Golf Cart is set for 6-7:30 p.m. at Chippewa Nature Center. Join CNC staff for an afternoon of stories as we travel across the property by golf cart. We'll check out the River Trail, Homestead and a few other areas while exploring some of the historic features at the nature center. A Salamander Meander is set for 10-11:30 a.m. at Riverview Natural Area. Silent and secretive, salamanders are a creature of mystery. Culinary Containers: Cocktails and Mocktails is set for 6-7:30 p.m. at Dow Gardens. Join staff member Debbie Anderson and mixologist Isabella Dean and explore differing varieties of herbs. There will be a select number of yoga mats that will be provided for those who don't have their own; drop-ins should plan on bringing their own mat. This class is open to all experience levels.
The Pendulum Lounge is open 4:30-8 p.m. at Midland Center for the Arts. Eternal Music Ensemble will be providing live music. Guests can enjoy craft cocktails, small plates and hearty offerings. Tickets are not required to attend the Pendulum Lounge, seating is available on a first-come first-served basis.
A Disability Pride Month kickoff event is set for 6-7:30 p.m. at Creative 360. Celebrate the talent and contributions to the community made by individuals with disabilities. There will be an exhibition of student art inspired by the methods of famous artists with disabilities and mental health challenges, performances by our Artshop Community Theatre group and a talent show. Kickoff Disability Pride Month by supporting local artists with disabilities and purchasing their art. There is no charge for this event, though donations graciously accepted.
An Upper Chippewa River Kayak is set for 6-9 p.m. at Chippewa Nature Center. Spend an evening paddling down the Chippewa River with a naturalist looking for turtles, fish, herons, hawks and eagles. After meeting at the Visitor Center, the group will travel to the Universal Access Site via CNC van and begin a leisurely paddle down river back to the Nature Center. Disney's High School Musical is set to perform at 8 p.m. at the Midland Center for the Arts' outdoor stage. When the captain of the basketball team meets the new brainy transfer student, the pair instantly connect and discover their passion for singing. After they get cast together in their school musical, the pair sets off a chain of events that upsets the "Status Quo" and puts all of East High into a musical frenzy. Local high school students will join Broadway veterans in the cast. Other performances are set for 8 p.m. June 24 and 25. A John Pratt Mosaic House tour is set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Creative 360. The John Pratt Mosaic House stands as a reminder of a man who, through art, battled his demons and inspired countless others along the way. Visitors will learn about John Pratt and the twists and turns his life took that led him to this extraordinary endeavor. Everyone will then drive separately to the house to hear more stories and experience the house for themselves. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $8.
Pints for Pups is set for 5-8 p.m. at Midland Brewing Company. The public is welcome to enjoy a night of great dogs (bring yours), drinks, food, music, outdoor games, a raffle auction and mini pet photoshoots. Support the animals of Humane Society of Midland County while having a great time with friends. Cover is a $15 donation, which includes a pint glass and one beer. A percentage of Midland Brewing Company's group sales will be donated back to the humane society.

Story Time is set for 10-11 a.m. at Dow Gardens. Come to hear award-winning children’s books read aloud in the Children’s Garden. All ages are welcome. Included with admission or purchase of an annual admission card. This is a drop-in event. Registration is not required.

The Great Lakes Market is set for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Emerson Park. Over 40 artists and makers will be on site with their wares. There will also be live music and food trucks. The market will continue 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, July 17. Admission and parking is free.
Bill Engvall - the Farewell Tour is set to perform at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Midland Center for the Arts. Bill Engvall is a Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the top comedians in the country. He returns to the Center after performing here in 2020. "Here’s Your Sign It’s Finally Time" will be his farewell tour as he retires from standup. A Dog Days of Summer Hike is set for 10 a.m. at Riverview Natural Area. Hit the trails to escape the summer sun under the shady canopy of Riverview Natural Area. Guides will give an option for a longer hike at the stairways, hikers can choose a one-mile hike or an additional two miles. Participants are encouraged to bring their dogs for a hike, but a dog is not required. Dogs will be leashed.
Airport Story Hour is set for 1-2 p.m. at Jack Barstow Municipal Airport. Children ages 2-5 are invited to enjoy a light snack while listening to an aviation/space related story at this free event. Warm weather readings will be held in the beautiful outdoor MCADA area near the terminal. Cold weather readings will be held in the terminal building. If held inside current CDC recommendations will be followed.
A Senior Pancake Breakfast is set for 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at Greater Midland Community Center's 50+ Center. Cost is $3 for 50+ members, $5 for non-members; cash only, sign up one week prior to the event.
Music in the Woods is set for 6 p.m. at the John and Marjorie Hohman Amphitheater on Northwood University's campus. Coleman Road Band will perform. The event also will include food trucks, yard games for the whole family and free cake and non-alcoholic beverages. Adult beverages will be available for purchase at Tavern 59, which will be set up for attendees who are 21 years of age or older.
A Lunchtime Concert featuring Cool Lemon Jazz is set for 12-1:30 p.m. at Dow Gardens. Bring a blanket or a chair and listen to live music in the dappled shade of the Birch Grove. Picnics are welcome. Included with admission or purchase of an annual admission card.
“An Evening with Your Candidates,” a forum of Midland area candidates for U.S. Congress and Michigan House and Senate is set for 5:30 p.m. in Riepma Arena at Northwood University. This event is free and open to the public.
Movies on Main is set to show "The Grinch" at 9 p.m. outside of Ace Hardware in Downtown Midland. Concessions will be available for purchase. Guests can bring a lawn chair and blankets. This event is free.
Victoria Ritter grew up in Midland and after earning a degree in English at Grand Valley State University, returned. She joined the Daily News as its newsroom clerk, and eventually began editing obituaries, and in 2016 wrote her first article. She loves the arts, from reading and creative writing to catching a movie or singing in her church choir.
